Mission Statement
And Some Personal Stuff about:
Who we are.

We feel that it is important for you to know to whom exactly you may be entrusting your favorite Mooney while you are doing business with our organization.
Therefore, rather than just being a "voice on the phone," and who (as a broker/dealer) may be operating out of a spare bedroom or cubbyhole office someplace, you should know a little about our personal history and qualifications.

To the man, we truly operate this endeavor because we love Mooneys and have made it our business to learn as much about the fabulous Mooney product line as humanly possible. We also make every effort to appreciate the effort and expense you go to just to bring your Mooney to us, and we strive to make every attempt to treat you just as we would like to be treated.

P001480.jpg (75801 bytes)We emphatically ask that if you ever have any comments or suggestions, please never hesitate to make your feelings known to us. Like they say, "if you are happy tell others, if not please tell us!" For if you aren't satisfied, our staff has failed and if you don't make us aware, you too share in the responsibility!
Note:  Click on photo for a larger view of our staff.

My office, e-mail, phone/fax, and hangar is always open to new and better ideas on how to best help you enjoy your Mooney experience. Our goal is to make your flying and owning one of Al, Art, and Ralph's magnificent, efficient and fast, "magic carpet " creations one of your lives most productive, safest, and enjoyable experiences.

Coy G. Jacob, President and Founder Jacob Aviation Inc., dba The Mooney Mart/Mod Squad Complex. And The Mooney Brothers Aeroplane Co. Outfitters

Coy G. Jacob
President

Flying His First Mooney (just prior to mods) while still "stock"

While heralding from a long lineage of mechanics and mechanical tinkers, Coy's formal education includes two degrees (Marketing Management and Psychology) and his Mooney experience dates back to his "college days" in Missouri. It was there that he not only managed the college flying club and served as an charter pilot/CFI, but also taught a college course in flying and meteorology.  Interestingly, while in college his love of fast cars, motorcycles, boats, and aircraft led to his doing some amature racing.

He has since amassed flying experiences (or stick time) in everything from hang gliding (via jumping off cliffs), ulta-lights, various "tail draggers", to MU2's, and Citations. The vast majority of his 4,000+ hours is (of course) in his favorite -- Mooneys. He holds IFR CFI/BGI license's and also has significant stick time in gliders with a sprinkling of experience in helicopters as well. He served as test pilot for countless Mooney mod STC flight tests, has given numerous seminars on Mooney maintenance and Mod procedures, while being a graduate of the Mooney Factory Service School. Coy has flown in numerous exhibition and organized races and currently holds several "official" NAI/FAI World Speed Records in Mooneys which still stand.

His business background includes ownership and founding of various unique business which still exist today (mostly now owned by others) such as a boat manufacturing company, a manufactured housing/RV dealership, a coin operated telephone company, several commercial real estate ventures, and (of course) the former Mod Squad and Mod Works. Interestingly, his actual Mooney experiences date back to "college CFI days" in Missouri when his love of the Mooney brothers' (Al and Art) handiwork caused him to fall in love a certain (then brand new) super fast 1967 M20E.
Note: Not un-romantically, years later when finances allowed, he tracked down this very Mooney and purchased it. It was to a large extent, this very Mooney (N3260F) that served as a "test bed" (prototype) for the entire Mooney Mod industry as we now know it!

He has since served as a Consulting or Contributing Editor to various highly respected aconsumerlogo1.GIF (894 bytes)"independent" consumer orientated magazines such as AVIATION CONSUMER and LIGHT PLANE MAINTENANCE. He specializes as an "investigative reporter" for such topics as aircraft corrosion and high performance engines, and he does research on various new and innovative products being introduced to the GA marketplace such as: ANR headset technology, oil and fuel additives, new (non-corrosive) paint strippers, the hi-tech pulse technology battery maintenance, emergency/survival equipment, and many other new products. Many of the fruits of his flying experiences and subjects of his AVIATION CONSUMER articles and investigative reports can now be found in The Mooney Brothers Aeroplane Co. Outfitters Catalog.

Take advantage of his vast Mooney related aviation experiences, and visit his amazing Mooney facility in person and/or visit the nifty Mooney Bro's Aeroplane Co. Outfitters Catalog site.

He also has the only book currently in publication about Mooneys called; "The Backwards Tales". It is this illustrated reference book which serves as the backbone of Mooney Mart's well received Mooney Buyers Kit. Besides the care and feeding of Mooneys, his hobbies include target shooting, fast boats and motorcycles (which he has raced), and collecting/restoring vintage GM muscle cars and classic Triumph "scooters" (as he calls them)! He also has grown to understand (love/hate) computers.

Reflectively, Coy reports one of his most favorite things in life is "getting in a Mooney which finds itself on a frozen ramp someplace, and getting out just in time to see the perfect tropical sunset after making the textbook "squat and squeeker" on the numbers of a beach side runway someplace fun!" We urge you to take advantage of his vast Mooney related aviation experiences, and visit his amazing Mooney facility in person and/or visit the nifty Mooney Bro's Aeroplane Co. Outfitters Catalog.

Jeffrey P. Dick
Sales Manager

Jeff Dick PictureFew aviation professionals have amassed Jeff's versatile business background and still have his depth of both pilot and mechanical aviation savvy. Prior to aviation singing her sweet song to Jeff but after leaving his parents' Michigan based poultry business, Jeff founded, owned, and operated a chain of successful Service Stations and Goodyear Automotive Service Centers in the Detroit area. Under his ownership and by 1989 these business grew from eight employees to thirty-five and annual sales exceeded some $5 million.

After selling his automotive based business and after looking for a new direction, Jeff took a position of Chief Pilot and Director of Finance of a major health care software support organization having locations in both Michigan and Florida. Jeff was soon promoted to the position of Senior Comptroller and before long his land based duties superceded his flying chores. Again, aviation lured Jeff away from a desk in 1997 and we now consider ourselves lucky to have an individual of Jeff's caliber to manage our Mooney aircraft sales division.

In some 22 years of flying Jeff has owned 5 aircraft including 2 twins and has accumulated some 3,000+ hours with substantial time in numerous cabin class twins such as King Airs. He is a most accomplished ATP who also shares full knowledge of the mechanic aspects of the Mooney design

Mark Timmons Picture Mark Timmons
Director of Maintenance

A&P IA, & Pvt./IFR Pilot

Mark, a true Southerner, was born in The Big Easy (New Orleans, LA) but mostly claims Atlanta as his home where for nearly 10 years he served as a Major Projects Superintendent for a large commercial construction firm. Aviation "sang her sweet song" and Mark was listening. As a result, his intrinsic love for flying brought him both to Florida and to change occupations to his true love, Mooneys. Mark is married with 2 children and holds a Private being fully qualified in every M20 model including TLS and Ovations.

He has 7 years experience in GA aviation with some 4 years working exclusively on Mooneys. Coy says, "I have hired and worked with many a Mooney mechanic and besides only having to be told or shown once, Mark has a unique inherent understanding of the M20 design many times which has amazed (even) me with his ability to get to the root of the problem quickly." Mark has probably annualed, inspected, modified, and trouble shot more Mooneys in the last 4+ years than most any 10 A&P's will in their lifetimes! He has served as a lightning rod for the Factory Service Dept. in finding persistent field problems which then many times later on become SB's and/or AD's.

Mark's aviation credentials are outstanding and include an Associate Degree in Science from Georgia State University, a Certificate in FAA Avionics Repair Technology from Atlanta Tech, with a Graduate Certificate in Aviation Maintenance Technology from Atlanta Tech as well. Mark is an accomplished Mooney pilot who (on occasion) also serves as a delivery and retrieval pilot, and does on the spot or local pre-buys for clients upon request. Mark is fully current in virtually all M20 models including TLS, Encores, and Ovations. If Mark can't find a genuine potential problem in a Mooney, it probably doesn't exist! Consider yourself lucky if your Mooney can benefit from Mark's hands-on knowledge and experience of Mooneys. When it is time to annual Coy's personal Mooney, it is regularly left in Marks custody, un-supervised by Coy. That, (as they say), should say it all............!

Kevin J, Surrell
Sales & Mod Consultant
A&P, Pvt. Pilot

Kevin's first Mooney experience after a enjoying carrier operations with the Navy was with Coy in St. Louis at Mod Squad in circa 1985.   Gaining some 5 years invaluable Mooney experience helping designing Mooney mods while at Mod Squad, Kevin then followed Coy to his opening of Mod Works in '90 where he served as Mod Works Service Manager until 1994 when he became a part owner and VP Customer Service.  Selling his portion of Mod Works in '96 he personally became a Mooney owner gaining some 1,200+ hrs acting as both a test pilot and owner.  Kevin temporality left the Mooney maintenance/mod business for a few years but Al's little handiwork sang her sweet song and Kevin has been listening........all the while.

In short, Kevin brings an astounding amount of Mooney know-how and hands-on experience to our shop as for some 15 years, quite possibly he has single-handedly supervised more Mooney mods than anyone on the planet! He now leads our "mod crew" and you can consider yourself lucky to have Kevin's doting hands bless your Mooney while here in our shop.

Besides his Mooney expertise, Kevin is also an accomplished property and causality insurance agent and operates a chain of automotive agencies locally.  There is no doubt that Kevin has Mooniac fluids flowing through his veins and is a welcome addition to our shop.

William (Bill) Turner
Sales & Mod Consultant
A&P, Pilot

William (Bill) Turner joins the other ex Mod Works or Mod Squad era employees such as Chief A&P Mike Haucke, Fueltankologist Lew Lewyckyj, Mod Specialist Frank Paul. The addition of Bill along with their fellow co-workers, brings the "Mooney specific" experience level at Coy’s Venice based operation up to nearly the 100 Year Cumulative Mooney Experience milestone, something few (if any) other Mooney shops can claim.

Bill’s Mooney career started nearly 10 years ago when Coy brought him aboard while with the Mod Squad in St. Louis. When Coy left (the old) St. Louis Mod Squad in circa ’89 to start his Florida Mooney operations, Bill (along with Kevin) soon followed. Bill had been with Mod Works Inc. for nearly 10 years, first as an A&P Mooney Specialist, then Paint Shop Manager, and for the last 3 years as a Mod & Service Consultant. Bill’s "hands on" knowledge is superb and he speaks Mooney fluently.

Bill's background, that of a world traveler "Army Brat," starts out in aviation with his service in the USAF where he was a Staff Sergeant Line Mechanic on T-38’s to B-52’s. Interestingly Bill was stationed at Edwards ASAF Base Flight Test Center where he worked on the F15 and A10 test pilot programs. Born in Texas but has lived in Florida 18 years. Bill is married and has 1 boy in high school.

cal1.tif (243038 bytes)Calvin (Cal) F. Hensley

 Sales Consultant, Pilot &

(Good Mooniac Communicator)

Cal hails from from central Ohio where he founded, owned, and operated MoJac Inc a successful propane gas trucking company for some 35 years. After selling his trucking business, Cal tired of the depressing and "dreary Midwest winters," so he elected to move to our tropical corner of Mooney paradise here in Gulf Front Venice some 2 years ago.

Cal certainly qualifies as an experienced aircraft owner as he has owned 5 Mooney aircraft amassing some 2,500+ hours as a Instrument Pilot. Not unlike many Mooniacs and while based in the Midwest, Cal primarily used his aircraft for both business and traveling to warmer winter roosts such as Florida. Cal has owned several of Al and Art's handiwork Mooneys with the current personal Mooney of choice being a highly modified turbo M20K/262. Cal remarks that one of life's greatest pleasures is just knowing that he has his own personal Magic Carpet Mooney in his hangar awaiting his every command to whisk him off to wherever his heart's desire directs.

Cal's experience awaits your tapping into his Mooney knowledge as a long time Mooney owner who truly understands how a small/med business owner can utilize a Mooney to increase business market penetration as well as provide an immense source of satisfaction and joy.

Dewey Henderson Picture Dewey D. Henderson
Engineering & FAA Coordinator

Dewey hails from the Midwest (Missouri) where he served as an Lead Engineer for Research & Development of the Dayco Technical Center for Dayco Products Inc. Dayco is a major manufacturer of automotive drive components. His duties included designing and developing automotive belt tensioners now in wide use by European and Japanese automotive manufacturers. His designs involved parts made by "state-of-the-art" CNC and CAD/CAM milling, die casting, stamping, cold-forming, powdered metal, investment casting and plastic injection molding processes. Many of these talents and experiences learned at Dayco transfer directly to his function here at Mooney Mart where Dewey designs STC components and retrofits while serving as the FAA STC Coordinator and Engineer.

His formal education includes BS Degrees from Drury College and interestingly, he has been awarded 35 U.S Patents. Henderson has been honored within the automotive/aerospace industry by being a recipient of the prestigious Arch T. Colwell Merit Award from the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers; which also governs aviation). On top of that, Dewey has served on the International SAE Standards Committee for several years which governs Automotive & Aviation Industry SAE standards world wide. Over the years, Dewey has developed numerous FAA STC's and is largely responsible for our on-going retrofit, modification, and STC program.

Dewey's love for aviation dates back to 1952 when he was employed at Boeing Aircraft Co. doing modifications on B47's. Henderson also designed the prop drive systems for various BD Aircraft Co. while working for Jim Bede and Burt Rutan. He also served the Missouri National Guard as the Maintenance Officer for the 142nd Army Aviation Div. He holds a Private Certificate and (like all of us) is a victim of Mooney's sweet song as he has both worked on and flown most every Mooney model while at Mooney Mart for the last 5 years.

Mike Haucke
A&P Chief Powerplant & STC Mechanic

Mike has probably completed more Mooney engine change STC's and mods (well over 200+) than anyone in the U.S., bar none. He is also well versed on the M20 airframe as having special expertise in landing gear set-ups and repairs as well as speed mods. Coy says of Mike, "He has been working in aviation since 1976 and I hired Mike some 11 years ago where he has served as my lead and (now) Chief Powerplant STC Tech and Mechanic. Mike previously served with me when I was at both Mod Squad and when I founded/owned Mod Works. When something is not quite right on my personal Mooney's engine, I talk to Mike." Mike is an avid fisherman and (interestingly) has worked as a "high performance" engine mechanic in the automotive racing industry.

Mike's formal education includes an AA Degree from Alabama Tech, with a major in General Aviation Technology. He graduated With Honors (nearly straight A's), and is also a graduate from countless factory schools such as The Piper Factory School, Allison Turbine Factory School, Enstrom Helicopter Factory Schools, as well as both the Mooney Factory School and the Mooney PFM Porsche Factory School. Mike is perhaps one of the few Mooney mechanics in the U.S. who (as an accomplished engine diagnostician) can cite factory set-up specs and procedures on nearly every M20 engine installation from memory and he has crafted several special use tools just to suit your Mooney. Frankly, the term best suiting Mike is "A Mooney Maintenance Mooniac."

Don.jpg (6581 bytes)

Donald (Don) Jansen
Com/Inst/Multi/CFII
M20 Electrician &
Inst. Panel Specialist
(Delivery & Retrieval Pilot)

Don Jansen’s true love of flying began in 1967 when he took his first lesson at historic College Park Airport in Maryland. Don flew for the Annapolis Navel Cadet Program for 1 year, the Civil Air Patrol for 20 years and participated in the AOPA Air Safety Foundation flight training clinics for 6 years teaching pinch hitter, instrument procedures, and instrument proficiency courses in addition to freelance flight instruction.

He holds a Commercial and CFII in SEL and holds a multiengine rating. During his 32 years of flying, his ratings remained current and he amassed over 5000 hours with over 3000 of those hours in Flight Instruction. Don has taught flight instruction in many types of Piper, Cessna, Grumman, and Mooney aircraft. His flying during the last 3 years includes over 800 hours in most models of Mooney aircraft with over 300 of those being flight instruction for new Mooney owners and for M20 refreshers. He is also proficient in many Avionics packages, and Mooney power plants and aircraft systems.

Don moved to Florida in 1996 after retiring from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland where he was a electronic technician specializing in network installation. Florida seems the place for him to be since the weather is almost always perfect for flying. He lives in Venice with his wife, Laraine.

Don is the person you will probably see when you take delivery of your new Mooney and seek instruction. He is also a delivery and retrieval pilot. Since being affiliated with Mooney Mart, he has delivered and picked up Mooneys from as far away as Colorado, Nevada and Maine. New Mooney owners commonly call him from all over the United States to get checked out or even for “just a few hours refresher”.

He is a map agent for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and so while your are here with your Mooney, you can get proficient and make sure you have the charts you need to fly anywhere you can imagine. Just call Don and you will be on your way to many fun and safe flying hours.

Lew Lewyckyj (Leveski)
Fuel Tankologist &
Master M20 Airframe Craftsman

"Lew is undoubtedly on of the finest Mooney craftsmen I have ever had the pleasure of working with," says Coy. Coy further adds "I hired Lew some 9 years ago when I owned Mod Works and while there his duties included that of a master airframe mechanic (sheet metal) and fuel tank repair specialist." Another of Lew's specialties is his ability to duplicate (or better) OEM quality riveting and hand crafting sheet metal repairs on major insurance rebuilds especially where "it shows".

Lou has probably repaired and/or completely stripped and resealed more M20 fuel tanks than any other single mechanic in the U.S.! By his own count, he calculates he has worked on well over 200+ Mooney tanks, and installed nearly 100 Precise Flight Speed Brake STC's. He has also completely re-skinned well over 50 M20 wings which flew "hands off" w/out major trim adjustments thereafter!

We utilize Lew as our resident or "in house" FUELTANKOLOGIST as he has a "No Leak" fuel tank delivery rate of (an amazing) 98%+. In fact, it is common knowledge around the shop that Lew takes it quite personally if any of his work is ever criticized and/or any of his fuel tanks ever cause a problem of any kind! He is responsible for many of the custom tools our shop used for Mooney airframe work and he has helped design our famous "fuel tank pressure testing system" which is designed to catch any leaks prior to them being delivered.

Lew's originally hails from West Germany and has received the highest marks as an Instructor Shop Foreman. His U.S work experience includes a stint at Link Engineering, GM, and Ford where he was a master machinist. He also worked as a custom motorcycle and limo/van designer where he won various awards.

He is married to fiery Rita (an ICU/RN) and has lived in Florida for nearly 20 years. We consider ourselves lucky to have Lew on our staff and he delivers "world class" or "better than new" workmanship on every Mooney he touches. Anyone who who works around Lew can easily detect that he actually fully enjoys his work and besides his personal enthusiasm being catching, it is one of his greatest assets!

Office Manager & Office Staff

Denise (Deni) A. Moore,
Office Manager
And "Rudder"

No company can run efficiently if the office staff isn't experienced, is ill equipped, or not up to par. We are certainly fortunate in that we have an experienced professional such as Deni to head up our front office. Deni originally hails from Indiana where she studied Interior Design and minored in Business Administration. Uniquely, she also owned and operated her own successful cosmetology school and served as an Office Manger for such companies as Caterpillar's Large Engine Division.

Deni Phone.jpg (3624 bytes)She brings copious organizational and people skills to our organization and she may very well be your first point of contact with us. It is her job to interface with both our modification/service Mooney owners as well as our Aircraft Sales clients to see that your contracts and invoices are accurate and up to date. She is also in charge of scheduling deliveries and seeing to it that your needs are met while visiting.

When visiting, either Deni or one of her staff will be more than happy to make arrangements for local accommodations, rental cars, provide directions to our beautiful beaches or golf, and offer recommendations as to our favorite places to enjoy the areas bountiful seafood or take in some local color.

kate1.jpg (14894 bytes)

Mary Katherine
"Kate" Fleming

Accountant &
Executive Admin. Assistant

Every now and again someone special enters your life or organization which everyone can truly say is always a true joy to work and be associated with.   Kate is such person in our organization......and we consider ourselves lucky to have her.

Besides being a Cum Laude Graduate (Accounting) from Indiana U and having the distinction of being listed in "Who's Who" by Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, Kate is truly an energetic "spark" in our organization.   She handles all of our closing statements, accounting, and our invoicing as well as our computerized parts inventory system.   She lives in Venice Florida where she reports that as an avid bird watcher, she spends lots of spare time at the beach and "wetting her line" in anticipation to landing that "big one".    Being an avid bird watcher however creates interesting commentary with Coy who reports that as an outdoorsman himself, his favorite sport is "watching" birds or other game through his Redfield 3X9 Scope attached while to his favorite Browning rifle....

She comes to us from Elcotel Electronic where she served as an accountant  whose supervisor reports was deeply saddened by her leaving.  Prior to that Kate has lived in Madrid Spain for 2 1/2 years where she enjoyed "getting to know the real Spain" and raising her "Magna Cum Laude" son of  whom she is most proud.....

Shop Personnel Qualifications Summary

As you read the preceding backgrounds and bio's on our staff, it is hard to comprehend a more qualified Mooney Maintenance and Mod Shop anywhere!    Rather unabashedly we might point out several of our folks probably have Mooney specific knowledge that few (if any) other A&P have accumulated anywhere else.
Frankly, when it comes to aviation, and Mooneys in specific, there is no substitute for experience. Don't let others learn on your Mooney!

linesparkp252.gif (1525 bytes)
Experience Knows No Substitute
linesparkp252.gif (1525 bytes)
Many times this unforgiving fact is borne out on a daily basis in our own shop when inspecting aircraft brought in after others have had their way with them.

Almost every day we hear or experience how important "hands on" experience is to a Mooney owner. Within the last few months alone I give the following examples of the fact that:

Experience Knows No Substitute:

    1) How about the 252 in from Connecticut who's owner had spent over $3,000 troubleshooting a "low manifold pressure" problem with several local "Mooney experts" when within 30 minutes we located a $125 cracked intake pipe. Had the owner been here first, he would have saved over $3,000 in repairs and parts he didn't need, and 4 trips to his local shop.

    2) How about the well meaning M20E owner who had been trusting his annual to his (otherwise competent) "nice guy" local A&P to annual for nearly 10+ years.   When it arrived here and since our guys inspect more Mooney in any week than most shops do in years, and we know exactly where to look for potential problems. Upon our inspection it was evident the lower spar cap (sometimes called the jesus cap*) had been badly corroding for years and had now gone way beyond the safe point and needed to be replaced. The wing had to come off and the down-time exceeded 3 months with the total bill over $14,000. Chances are, had we been inspecting it a few years ago and/or fogging it with Corrosion-X, most likely it never would have gotten to the "catastrophic" stage.

Note: It is said, that if this spar cap gives way, you (hopefully) tend to meet Jesus. We now have this part nailed on our shop part counter wall for all to see.

    3) The M20E buyer who brought his aircraft to us soon after he bought it from the (reported) "Head of Maintenance of a major U.S airline." He thought it was sure to be in good condition when after our inspection when installing some mods, we located automotive body filler or "bondo" in place of where several of the structural 4130 fuselage tubes should have been! They had rusted nearly away! Cost: over $3,000 and lots of bitterness and anger on the buyer's part.

    4) The Insurance repair for a simple "Gear Up" which showed that the original problem was a (well meaning) "local" A&P had adjusted the gear so the manual gear handle would "work easier." The gear collapsed upon a subsequent landing: Cost: $19,480. The downtime: nearly 2 months.

    5)  How about the guy who boasted a "two owner/always hangared, well maintained" M20K/231 who's alternator quit charging.  After installing two new alternators and one regulator, his local (well equipped attractive) FAA Repair Station took 4 days labor to find the alt. drive coupling had failed and any alternator connected to it wasn't going tospin under a load.  Now if that wasn't enough, when we finely got the 231 in our shop we found severe 4130 rusty fuselage tubular corrosoion!  This corrosion had been going on for years and  had been missed by their annual inspections.  Had it been found years prior, it wou ldn't have resulted in replacement of any of the tubes......  Boy, was he upset!

These lists can go on for nearly as long as there are N numbers of Mooneys flying. Many times we find (otherwise well meaning) shops regularly charge far more for work than our invoices tally. It seems that again, even when it comes to economics alone, there is no substitute for experience as our guys are nearly always so far down on the learning curve that we can do many jobs in nearly half the time!

Consequently, our shop performs many maintenance functions on Mooneys at a pre-determined flat rate which many times is far less than you would pay others by the hour. That means that you are rarely surprised by your invoice when you pick up your Mooney from our shop.

Far more often than not, even considering travel expenses to and from our well staffed semi-tropical facility, it is far less expensive in the long run to let our mechanics Do What They Do Best, rather than allow others to "Learn On Your Mooney"..
