Hangar Talk Posting: Dear Coy,
This is Ralph and Cindy Antolino. We have communicated in the past. I have
several items I'd like to discuss with you when you have a chance:
1. We own a 1995 M20R. It does not have TKS. Living in
Ohio we are interested in either adding TKS or trading in on a newer plane. What
sort of value could we expect? The aircraft has ~730 hours since new and the
complete King panelnel. Always hangared, except occasionally when away from home and
space was not available.
2. Covers: We read with interest your recent article in Aviation Consumer.
We purchased a cover from Ground Tech covers shortly after acquiring the aircraft in
1995 and sent it back because it did not fit well. In particular, it was difficult
to fasten around the belly and did not cover the windshield, nor go down over the cowling
in the front of the plane. Do you have a nice cover like the one pictured in your
article you could sell us?
3. Heat Shields: We are also in the market for heat shields. Do you have
some that are custom made for the M20R? We'd like the suction cup versions pictured
in the article, or your best recommendation. We currently use automobile shades that
are not custom fitted. They come in handy on long trips when the sun beats down on us or
our passengers.
4. Repair Work: I don't have confidence in anyone locally to do some touch up
work. Weather has worn the paint in several places. Also, the left gear doors were
"dinged" once when crossing a grass field. Finally, at a recent MAPA PPP a cfi
was demonstrating his version of a soft field and scrapped the tail on the runway. Are
these kinds of repairs part of your business?
5. Fuel Tank Leak: Don Bymaster at the September PPP I attended pointed out what
he thinks is a fuel tank leak. We've been told that it is due to the lining the EPA
required in 1995. Something else to think about when and if we can get down to you.
6. Aileron and Gear ADs: I have been told that there is an aileron repair and a
gear repair that I must comply with quickly. Are you familiar with these? Have you
done them before on an M20R? Can you get the parts?
7. What if we left the airplane with you from 12/26/98 to 1/2/99. Could you get
anything done over these dates?
8. Also I'm interested in getting a Tanis heater installed. Hope this isn't too much to
deal with.
Sincerely, Ralph Antolino, Jr.
Forum Moderators: Thanks for your
posting. First, TKS usually costs approx. $30,000+/- to install and
does add significantly to resale. While most "mods" add some 70%+/- of
their originalnal cost to the value of the subject Mooney, because of the relatively
"narrow" market appeal of TKS it seems to add approx. 50% unless you have time
to wait for just that special buyer who is seeking a TKS Mooney. It is
probably a better bet w/a TLS or Ovation than a MSE though. Next, Covers
& glass heat shields; any cover from Cunningham and/or Kennon which uses the
"silk" windshield/glass liner is some of the best available. We also stock
the interior heat shields I evaluated in A/Consumer. We have them custom made for
our clients mostly from these two vendors as well as a local mfg. We
strongrecommendend outside covers under most circumstances for protection against leaking
as well as sun etc. Note:I advise you see the maint.
section of our site where we have re-produced a section of the article in AVIATION
CONSUMER Magazine which I authored on the subject . Next, the various "repairs"
and maintenance you mentioned can all be done in our shop as most of them are done every
day. I donrecommendend just any shop tackle Mooney fuel tanks and M20 gear
problems, but our guys are true "pros" at it and usually are so far down the
"learning curve" that your overall cost is far lower than having someone else
"learn" on your Mooney. We have the parts in stock on the aileron problem as it
was our shop which first pointed this "problem" out to Mooney in the
first place......! Coy
The Hangar Talk Moderators anticipate beginning the posting of owner/enthusiasts
contributions by Aug. 15th, 1998 in this section.
Thank You.
