Mooney Discontinues M20J and M20K/Encore Production:
Opening with a statement that a new "lower price" (read; Lean Machine style) M20R/Ovation was soon to be introduced, Mooney Management recently stunned the aviation community with announcement that the vernable and (industry pace setting efficiency champ) 200 hp M20J and turbo M20K/Encore was soon to be discontinued. This flies in the face of past Mooney promotions and seemingly company product philosophy of "Performance Through Efficiency Of Design". The Ovation is powered with a 300hp TCM 6 cyl engine as apposed to the M20J's 200hp or the Encore's 220 hp.

Many GA industry insiders feel this stance is taken to fend off the up-coming competition from the newly certified 300 hp Lancair Columbia and Cirrus designs as the Ovation does edge the MSE out in cruise speed and overall climb etc. performance by a significant margin. It does not however offer the economy of the fuel mizerly 200 and/or the amazing MPG of even the turbo 220 hp Encore. We will sorely miss these aircraft as alternately they were usually considered the backbone of the Mooney production line for nearly 2 decades and were usually considered some of (if not THE) best designed and engine/airframe marriages in all of General Aviation.....!
