I own a 1964 M20E and am based near Annapolis, MD at a field with a N-S runway. The prevailing winds are from the NW, making it a "crosswind" runway. There were several strong crosswind days over the years that I wished I had the full-span rudder found on later-model Mooney's for better crosswind control. You might consider checking out in the type of Mooney you are interested in renting/buying and fly on some crosswind days with an instructor to see for yourself what it is like.
The M20E should be a satisfactory climber out of high elevation fields. It does a fine job of cruising in the 10,000 to 17,000 ft altitudes, if you desire to do so. The injected engine also affords less susceptibility to unexpected icing conditions than carb-type engines as long as you keep the ram air door closed.
